Carlton to act over McLean tweet: Simpson

Carlton midfielder Kade Simpson says teammate Brock McLean will face censure from the AFL club after his offensive AIDS comment on Twitter.

McLean posted “Today can f*** right off” on Tuesday night, which prompted another user to ask if he’d been delisted.

The 26-year-old, who has struggled to make an impact since joining Carlton at the end of the 2009 season, replied with a comment saying he’d contracted AIDS from the user’s mother.

McLean’s post came just one week after the Blues were fined $7500 after three of their players criticised umpires.

McLean quickly deleted the offensive post and apologised in Wednesday’s Herald Sun, however Simpson confirmed the Blues will take further action.

“I’ve just heard a few whispers with what’s happened,” Simpson told radio station SEN on Wednesday.

“Obviously, he’s stepped over the line.

“I’m sure he’s going to learn from it.

“The club will have a sitdown about what he’s said and obviously something will have to be done about it.”

Simpson said the leadership group would meet Carlton’s football operations manager Andrew McKay and “take the best action that we see fit”.

Simpson admitted Carlton’s Twitter users had been briefed by the club on what is acceptable on the social networking website.

“When you sign up to it and the club realise you’re on Twitter, they have a little word to you about what you’re going to post,” he said.

“We obviously had a little chat a couple of weeks ago after Murph (Marc Murphy) and Laids (Jeremy Laidler) tweeted that stuff.”

Laidler used Twitter to accuse umpires of penalising players who were first to the ball in the Blues’ last-start loss to West Coast in Perth.

Murphy tweeted: “Ruined a good game those blokes”.

Jarrad Waite re-tweeted a quip from his wife suggesting West Australian umpire Dean Margetts should get three Brownlow votes as best afield.
