Preview:

Carlton play the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, 4.40pm at Etihad Stadium. The Blues are not in a good place at the moment, having virtually eliminated their finals hopes with their loss to Fremantle last round. While they can still make the grade on paper, they will need to win every match while also relying on Port Adelaide to lose. Saying that though, the Blues will be favourites here against the Bulldogs.

Liberatore signs until 2016 for AFL ‘Dogs

A year after serving a four-game AFL ban imposed by Western Bulldogs following a drug incident, young midfielder Tom Liberatore has capped a brilliant season with a new three-year contract.

The 21-year-old father-son draft pick, who leads the league in clearances after round 19 with 7.72 per game, signed a three-year extension on Thursday.

Liberatore’s 2012 season was over after he was found by police in possession of an ecstasy tablet on Melbourne’s King Street.

The youngster picked up a strike under the AFL’s illicit drugs policy and was handed a four-game suspension by his club.

“Tommy doesn’t say much, but the events of 12 months ago left a lasting impression,” coach Brendan McCartney told reporters on Thursday.

“It’s all part of growing up and maturing, as a club too (with) how we deal with it and (how) we develop our people and players (while) still respecting they are all unique individuals and have different character traits.”

The son of the Bulldogs’ Brownlow Medallist Tony Liberatore, Tom is averaging 25 disposals per game in 2013 after being drafted in 2010 as father-son pick.

“Tom has had an impressive first 50 games and is becoming a more balanced player as he continues to gain more experience,” Bulldogs’ list manager Jason McCartney said.

“He has a rich family history here at our club and we are pleased he can continue that over the next three years at least.”

Liberatore, who mirrors his father’s tackling intensity and averages six per game this season, says it has been his dream to play at the club.

“I look forward to contributing to the team as best as I can over the next three years, and being part of an exciting journey at the Western Bulldogs,” he said.

The young Bulldogs’ side are 15th with a 5-13 win-loss record with four rounds remaining and face Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
