Preview:

Carlton take on St Kilda on Saturday, 7.40pm at Etihad Stadium. Despite the Blues’ heavy 41 point loss to the Magpies last round, they will be expected to win this one.
The Saints were almost as bad with a 30 point loss against the Dockers last round, with St Kilda hard to pick after a pretty sketchy season. Saying that, however, the
Saints have a great record against the Blues, with Carlton maybe still rocked from their loss last week. While both sides have had average seasons at best, this could be
a close contest if key players find form.

Saint Hayes to weigh up AFL future

St Kilda coach Scott Watters says he may have to twist the arm of Lenny Hayes in order to convince the star veteran to play on for another AFL season.

Hayes impressed with 25 possessions and six clearances against Fremantle on Sunday in his first AFL hit-out since round nine.

The 33-year-old will wait until the end of the season before making a call on his future, but Watters is keen on the idea of the 270-game veteran playing on.

“We have ongoing discussions about next year. I’ll probably try to twist his arm,” Watters joked after the 30-point loss to Fremantle.

“But to be fair to Lenny, he just wants to play out the rest of the year and that’ll give him a good assessment on where he wants to go.

“Like any player that is over 30, it’s a year-by-year proposition and you have open dialogue with your player.”

Hayes said he enjoyed being back in action, and was buoyed by the effort displayed by some of St Kilda’s emerging young talent against an experienced Fremantle outfit.

“The decision for me will be what’s best for the team, and how I go in the next seven, eight weeks. I’ll make a decision then,” Hayes said.

“For myself, it was good to be back out there. I needed the full game and got through.”

Despite the Saints sitting in 16th spot with a 3-11 record, Hayes sees a bright future for the club once their emerging youngsters get more experience.

“It’s an exciting time at the moment,” he said.

“It’s probably the youngest side I’ve been involved in and they really stood up.

“We couldn’t sustain it, Freo are a really good side, but there were some good signs there and that’s something to build on.”

St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt is a certainty to return against Carlton on Saturday night, but fellow veterans Stephen Milne and Justin Koschitzke are no guarantees to earn recalls.

Milne was stood down from playing duties after rape charges were levelled against him, while Koschitzke missed the loss to Fremantle due to soreness.

Watters said he would wait until later in the week before making a call on the pair.
