Demons should follow Port: AFL boss
Battling Melbourne should follow Port Adelaide’s blueprint to rejuvenate the AFL club, league boss Andrew Demetriou says.
As long-time sports administrator Peter Jackson took the chief executive helm at Melbourne on Wednesday, Demetriou suggested the Demons follow Port’s lead.
“It has been really fantastic to see Port Adelaide supporters coming out, so passionate, following their team again … they have got belief now,” Demetriou told reporters in Adelaide on Wednesday.
“And from an AFL perspective, that is what we would love to see in all our clubs. And that is what we’re hoping will happen with the Melbourne Football Club.
“They are going through a difficult period at the moment, not unlike how clubs go through from time to time.
“Peter Jackson is starting there today, hopefully he can start putting things in place as well to help that football club.”
The AFL propped up Port with $3 million funding when the club battled during continuous seasons of bleak on-field results.
But the Power, who haven’t played finals since 2007, have won their initial give games of this season amid record membership levels.
“I don’t know if relief is the word,” Demetriou said of Port’s change in fortunes.
“But we’re absolutely thrilled with the progress of Port Adelaide.
“If you get things right and you get good people in place, you can see a significant shift, you can see a significant improvement … they are putting together the basis of what forms a very strong football club.”
