News:

At an age when most AFL veterans loathe pre-season games, Adelaide’s 32-year-old recruit James Podsiadly couldn’t be more excited.

The former Geelong forward will play his first competitive match for the Crows on Sunday when they meet home-town rivals Port Adelaide in a pre-season fixture.

“It’s not for premiership points, which is what we all play footy for really, but it is exciting to be putting on a new jumper and playing with some new teammates,” Podsiadly told reporters on Tuesday.

The 2011 premiership player will combine with another recruit, ex-Carlton goalsneak Eddie Betts, in a revamped Adelaide forward line.

“It’s a new-look forward line so to get that cohesion is pretty important at this time of year,” Podsiadly said.

“Off the field, it (the cohesion) is really good but it’s hard to tell until we start playing some games against good opposition.

“It has been going well at training … we have just got to take it into this week and see how we go.”

Podsiadly’s union with Betts looms as a key for the Crows, with attacking spearhead Taylor Walker’s return from a knee reconstruction unlikely until a month into the season.

“He (Betts) is very impressive,” Podsiadly said.

“Off the training track too, he has taken a mentoring role with some of the young guys.

“On the training track, he’s as vibrant as he is off it.

“His skill and execution is fantastic … the pressure side of the smaller forwards, Eddie Betts in particular, key forwards get rewarded with that.”
