Coach Leon Cameron said GWS had taken a few steps back and revisited the horror days of their early years after an 89-point thrashing by Sydney ended their AFL finals hopes.

The Giants suffered their biggest loss of the season and managed just three goals in each half as the Swans strolled to a 20.13 (133) to 6.8 (44) win at Spotless Stadium on Saturday.

The Giants needed to win their last three games to sustain any faint hopes of a maiden finals campaign.

Both teams kicked one goal in the second quarter, but the Swans kicked 19 to five across the other three terms.

Cameron said there was no sugarcoating the performance.

“Clearly not good enough to make finals, that’s the first thing,” was Cameron’s first comment at his post-match press conference.

“I’m disappointed for the 20,000 fans that turned up. You’ve got one side that’s competitive, and one side that’s non competitive. That’s where it’s at.

“You can walk away with a four or five-goal loss and you can say `too good in these areas, more experienced, do this better,’ but not non-competitive.

“It’s disappointing because we’ve come so far. We’ve taken huge steps forward this year … but we took about three or four steps back today.”

He lamented the Giants had gone backwards in making sacrifices for each other,

Cameron wasn’t about to use injuries to key players like Phil Davis, Devon Smith, Shane Mumford, Dylan Shiel and Tim Mohr as an excuse for a limp performance reminiscent of several in their first couple of years.

“It was back to a few years ago,” Cameron said.

“Clearly we’ve got some injuries but they (the Swans) have got injuries as well, so that’s not an excuse.

“It would be wrong for me to say the season’s long and we’re tired because that’s not an excuse either.”
