Former Western Bulldogs captain Matthew Boyd will retire at the end of the AFL season.

The 34-year-old has played 291 games for the Bulldogs, including last year’s grand final victory over Sydney to break the club’s 62-year premiership drought.

Boyd, a three-time All Australian who made his debut in 2003, has been limited to nine games this season due to injury and poor form.

He last played in the Bulldogs round 16 loss to Adelaide after suffering an Achilles injury.

Boyd signed a one-year contract extension at the start of the season.

“I finish with absolutely no doubts about my ability to contribute,” Boyd told reporters on Tuesday.

“Last year … I still felt like I had something to give.

“It’s been a fantastic journey. I knew this year was going to be my last.

“I feel extremely fortunate to play the game as long as I played.”

Boyd captained the side from 2011 to 2013.
