Brownlow favourite Fyfe escapes AFL ban

Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe has escaped suspension over his tripping charge, while North Melbourne spearhead Jarrad Waite is also free to play this weekend.

Fyfe’s Brownlow medal hopes hung in the balance after he was reported for tripping Koby Stevens in Sunday’s 13-point win over the Western Bulldogs.

The incident occurred when Fyfe threw out his legs as he fell to ground in a bid to stop Stevens getting past him.

After the game, Fyfe admitted it was a bit of a brain fade moment.

Most current and former players believed the incident wasn’t worth a suspension.

And the revamped Match Review Panel agreed, handing Fyfe a $1000 fine instead in a result that keeps him eligible to win the Brownlow.

“Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Western Bulldogs Football Club, it was the view of the panel the incident should be classified as intentional conduct with low impact to the body,” the MRP said in a statement.

Waite was also offered a $1000 fine with an early guilty plea for his late hit on Zach Merrett in a marking contest.
