Brisbane Lions vs Port Adelaide Power Preview

A 2nd vs 3rd battle headlines the weekend in what is also the first finals meeting between Brisbane and Port since the 2004 Grand Final.

The Lions have had their fair share of critics throughout the season, but four wins on the trot over Fremantle, Adelaide, Collingwood, and St Kilda has helped steady the ship and silence some of the doubters.

Brisbane’s stunning record at the Gabba is well-documented, but there should be an element of revenge in mind after suffering a 54-point loss at the Adelaide Oval in the first round of the season.

Like every club, the Power have also gone through their share of ups and downs.

Port lost four on the trot heading into August, but they’ve really found a purple patch of late, putting together three solid wins over GWS, Fremantle, and Richmond.

Side by side, it’s fair to say the Lions are the more battle-tested team in terms of recent opponents, but given some of their accuracy problems in front of goal, Brisbane could prove to be its own worst enemy.

Joe Daniher had a shocker in the narrow win over St Kilda a fortnight ago, while Eric Hipwood continues to struggle to take contested marks at opportune times – a problem compounded even further with Jack Gunston on the sideline.

The Power have also had their troubles in front of goal, but that hasn’t stopped them from ranking third in points scored throughout the season.

Aside from stats and trends, what’s at stake can’t be overstated.

The chance to secure home-field advantage moving forward is huge, even more so for the Lions given their awful record at the MCG.

Daniher, Hipwood, and Charlie Cameron hold the keys to Brisbane’s chances, especially with such a strong advantage in front of the faithful at the Gabba.

The Power are more than capable of keeping up on the scoreboard, but even with a couple of cheap wins against struggling clubs to end the year, this feels like Brisbane’s game to lose.
