Preview:

The last Saturday match of round 16 is between the Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne. Kicking off at 7.40pm at the GABBA, this is another match that has the
potential to be a close contest. While North Melbourne will be expected to win, the Lions are coming off a good win against the Suns last week and certainly can’t be
ignored. Saying that, however, the Kangaroos also had a great win against the Tigers last round, and should be able to go home with the points despite their patchy 2013
season.

Free kicks a worry: Brisbane Lions coach

Losing the free kick count – not Jonathan Brown – was Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss’ major concern on Monday as he laughed off a suggestion his co-captain should come under scrutiny for contact on Gold Coast’s David Swallow.

Voss woke up to newspaper headlines asking whether the Lions’ AFL season would be scuppered by a Brown ban for his high contact on Swallow in last round’s 33-point win over the Suns.

Brown had already been sidelined for a fortnight this year over a round nine hit on Carlton’s Michael Jamison.

But asked if he feared Brown would come under the match review panel’s scrutiny, Voss scoffed: “Oh, please. That’s my response.

“Seriously, have you seen the incident?”

Brown’s arm appeared to make contact with Swallow as they competed for a ball in the first quarter and the Suns midfielder took his time to regain his feet afterwards.

Swallow received a free kick and played out the game.

But rather than worry about Brown being rubbed out of Saturday night’s Gabba clash with a fired up North Melbourne, Voss was more worried about getting the rub of the green from umpires.

Voss said he would ring AFL referees boss Jeff Gieschen after losing the free kick count 21-15 to the Suns last round.

It marked the fourth straight match and the ninth time in 14 this season that they had lost the count.

They concede the second most free kicks (20.4 per game) in the league, according to afl.com.au.

“There’s some really obvious things that are happening that don’t seem to be getting adjudicated exactly the same way for both sides,” Voss said on Monday.

“This has been happening over a long period of time. This is no isolated weekend.

“I don’t know if we can be that unlucky over that long period of time.”

The Lions will check on the availability of Brent Moloney (calf) and Mitch Golby (bruised lung) before preparing for their weekend clash with the Kangaroos, their 63-point round four conquerors.
