Preview:

Big news from Brisbane on Tuesday with the announcement that favourite son and head coach Michael Voss, will not have his contract renewed for 2014 season.

Given the performances of the Lions in the second half of the season when compared to that of the first half, some might say his sacking as unfair.

It will spur the Lions on for their remaining matches of this season however, starting with the GWS this weekend – the first time the two sides have met.

GWS registered their first win of the season in round 19, defeating the equally struggling Melbourne Demons but were brought crashing back to earth last week in Perth with Fremantle handing them a 113 point hiding.

It’s another interstate trip for the GWS this weekend who have been given 62.5 points start.

The Lions are generally not a big scoring team and will be without key forward Jonathon Brown.

They have showed this year however that when they get on a roll, they can be unstoppable as Essendon, North and Geelong can testify and they’ll be out to make sure that the news from this week does not hinder their performance in any way, shape or form.

Expect a big performance and win from the Lions here.

Lions find new AFL training base

As the Brisbane Lions search for a new head coach, they have found their future AFL training base and club headquarters at Springfield, west of Brisbane.

The Lions on Thursday announced they will move their operations from the Gabba to the developing western corridor between Brisbane and Ipswich after gaining a $15 million funding boost from the Federal Government.

Lions chairman Angus Johnson described it as one of the most significant days for Australian rules football in Queensland as the code will now boast a big presence in rugby league heartland.

Johnson said work on the $60 million “world-class facility” would start next year, be completed in 2016 and be one of the best in the AFL.

“It will be cutting edge,” he said. “We have football department staff in Europe and the United States looking at these facilities including AC Milan and NFL clubs.”

Springfield was preferred over the Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre, which hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games and the Brisbane Broncos in the 1990s, despite lacking the same proximity to the city.

The Lions will continue to play their home games at the Gabba.

The announcement comes just two days after Brisbane’s board axed club favourite Michael Voss as coach.

Johnson said the move would be another carrot to lure a future coach.

“The story for the Brisbane Lions is very compelling and then when you throw in a new $60 million training and administration facility in a growth area like this I would have thought it’s something a coaching candidate will take particular notice of,” he said.

“It will attract players, there’s no doubt about it, and will help retain our players as well.”
