Preview:

Round 10 kicks off with Brisbane hosting Collingwood and, with better performances the past two weeks from Brisbane, we should see a more competitive game than what would have been expected a only a few weeks back.

Brisbane surprised all with a win over Essendon back in round 8 (96-86) and last week, pushed Carlton all the way before falling thirteen points short (98-85).

It has been a much welcomed return to form from the Lions who had only won two of seven (Gold Coast and Melbourne) prior to the Essendon win and given their next three games are against three of the current to four teams (Fremantle, Geelong and Hawthorn), one that was desperately needed.

However, the suspension of star forward Jonathon Brown for this game and the next is the last thing the Lions needed after having established some kind of momentum.

Collinwood continued their win/lose sequence this year with a heavy 47 point loss to the Sydney Swans last week.

Having had handed Geelong their first defeat of the season the week prior, it continues a frustrating month for punters and Collingwood fans alike as the Pies struggle to string wins together.

This inconsistency sees them eleventh on the ladder and needing a win to keep in touch with the top half of the competition.

The Pies are 2-2 when playing away as favourites this year and it’s hard, given their up and down efforts in the last month, to tip them with any great confidence but, would expect them to win given their recent record of four from five against Brisbane.

AFL’s Magpies add Didak, Shaw for Lions

Collingwood premiership forward Alan Didak will play his first AFL game this year and Heath Shaw also returns to face a depleted Brisbane at the Gabba on Friday night.

Elevated rookie-list recruit Kyle Martin will make his AFL debut among four Magpies changes.

The Lions have made six, including losing star forward Jonathan Brown to suspension and Matthew Leuenberger (hand), Tom Rockliff (quad) and Sam Mayes (soreness) to injury.

Didak has spent two months building form and fitness in the VFL after a pre-season hamstring injury.

Shaw returns from a lower back injury, while unsatisfactory skinfold tests also contributed to him missing last round.

Jordan Russell (ankle) and Sam Dwyer (groin) were forced out, with Martin Clarke and young big man Jarrod Witts dropped.

Sydney’s Tom Mitchell, the son of former Swans star Barry, will make his AFL debut against Essendon at the SCG on Saturday night.

Essendon replaced Michael Hurley (ankle) with Scott Gumbleton, while the Swans also lost a key forward, Sam Reid (quad).

Fremantle speedster Stephen Hill is back after four games out injured to play an unchanged Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.

Young Geelong forward-ruckman Nathan Vardy, restricted by hip injuries to just 11 games in the past two seasons, will play his first AFL game this year at the expense of James Podsiadly (knee).

Midfield star James Kelly is back from suspension for Saturday night’s meeting with Gold Coast, but Paul Chapman (hamstring) will miss at least another two games.

Despite pushing premiership favourites Hawthorn last round, the Suns made five changes, including losing Jared Brennan (knee) and recalling vice-captain Michael Rischitelli.

Classy Carlton small forward Chris Yarran is back from injury to play Greater Western Sydney on Saturday.

The Blues lost ruckman Robert Warnock (knee), replaced by Levi Casboult.

Ruckman Dean Brogan returns for the Giants.

The Western Bulldogs have lost captain Matthew Boyd and defender Tom Young to calf injuries for Saturday night’s Darwin meeting with Port Adelaide.

Power small forward Jake Neade returns from a rest.

Strugglers Melbourne will make at least four changes for Sunday’s daunting encounter with Hawthorn.

James Magner, Neville Jetta and Max Gawn have been dropped and Shannon Byrnes (wrist) forced out, with experienced recruits David Rodan and Cameron Pedersen among the inclusions.

The Hawks regain David Hale and Grant Birchall but lose Jack Gunston (calf).

North Melbourne have lost Jack Ziebell to suspension, while Sunday’s opponents St Kilda have lost Lenny Hayes (calf) but regained fellow midfielder David Armitage.

Richmond dropped Luke McGuane for Monday night’s clash with West Coast, who are yet to make any cuts.
