Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer will undergo a procedure to bring his heart issues under control after being ruled out for the rest of the AFL season.

The 29-year-old was a late withdrawal from Sunday’s game against Fremantle after suffering an elevated heart rate for the second time in a month.

Kreuzer had his first heart scare during Carlton’s round 17 loss to St Kilda and has since seen a cardiologist to investigate the issue further.

The Blues did not elaborate on the procedure Kreuzer will undergo but he is expected to be available for next year’s pre-season.

“Following consultation with the specialist, it has been decided that Matthew will require the procedure to rectify the condition,” Blues football boss Andrew McKay said on Tuesday.

“Importantly, he is OK and all parties involved are working diligently to ensure we are providing Matthew with the best possible care.

“We look forward to welcoming him back for the commencement of the pre-season campaign.”

Midfielder Matthew Kennedy will also miss the rest of the season after sustaining ankle ligament damage at training that will require surgery.

Backman Jacob Weitering (corked quad) faces a fitness test ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Western Bulldogs.

The Blues meanwhile confirmed Fremantle list manager Brad Lloyd will take over as their new head of football at the end of the season.

Lloyd, who spent 11 seasons with the Dockers, will depart the club after serving a mutually-agreed notice period.

He replaces former Carlton captain McKay, who announced in June that he intended to step down as the Blues’ football boss.
