Biggest upsets of the 2017 AFL season

FIVE OF THE BIGGEST UPSETS OF THE AFL SEASON

One of the most even AFL seasons in the history of the game has produced some stunning upsets:

Hawthorn 14.12 (96) bt Adelaide 12.10 (82), round 14 at Adelaide Oval.

Ladder positions: Hawks 17th, Crows 1st

* * Ricky Henderson tormented his old side with 30 touches and two goals as the second-last-placed Hawks shocked the ladder-leading Crows in front of 45,312 fans.

Carlton 10.11 (71) bt Greater Western Sydney 9.16 (70), round 12 at Etihad Stadium.

Ladder positions: Blues 17th, Giants 1st

* The rebuilding Blues bravely stuck with the premiership favourites for three quarters, but Dylan Shiel put the Giants in front with the first goal of the final term before Carlton hit back to hang on for a nailbiting win.

Collingwood 15.17 (107) bt Geelong 11.12 (78), round six at the MCG.

Ladder positions: Magpies 13th, Cats 2nd

* Geelong were unbeaten after five games and the Pies’ season was in tatters after their Anzac Day loss to Essendon. But Levi Greenwood’s tagging job on Joel Selwood and Scott Pendlebury’s superb 33-possession game helped ease the pressure on embattled coach Nathan Buckley.

North Melbourne 22.13 (145) bt Adelaide 13.8 (86), round seven at Blundstone Arena.

Ladder positions: Kangaroos 15th, Crows 1st

* High-scoring Adelaide were unbeaten after six rounds and top of the ladder, when they faced the lowly Kangaroos in Hobart. But Jarrad Waite starred with six goals in a bizarre contest.

Brisbane 18.13 (121) bt Fremantle 9.10 (64), round 12 at the Gabba.

Ladder positions: Lions 18th, Dockers 8th

* The last-placed Lions were going nowhere fast when they hosted the Dockers. But Dayne Zorko starred with 30 touches and two goals as Brisbane led from start to finish.
