Beams won’t force trade from Lions to Pies

Dayne Beams hasn’t, and won’t, officially request a trade to Collingwood but the Brisbane star would like to play for the Magpies from next year.

Beams’ manager Paul Connors moved to clarify his client’s situation on Monday after reports emerged he is desperate to return to the club he played 110 games for, including the 2010 grand-final win over St Kilda.

The 28-year-old sought a trade to the Lions at the end of 2014 to be closer to his father, who was battling cancer at the time and passed away earlier this year.

Beams, who still has two years left to run on his contract, is keen to return to Collingwood but Connors said he won’t make any demands of the Lions.

“It would have to be really good (compensation) to Brisbane (for it to happen), but we’re not requesting a trade,” Connors told AFL Trade Radio on Monday.

“We haven’t requested a trade … we will look at it if it suits both parties and it’s been done maturely.

“If Collingwood think that it’s worthwhile and that he’d be a good fit for them then they’re going to need to come to the party.”

The Pies, who have an interest in luring Gold Coast’s Steven May, are limited in what they can offer the Lions, with their first-round pick currently No.18 and their second draft call not until No.51.

Nathan Buckley’s side had a win over the weekend when Tom Langdon turned down offers from Fremantle and Sydney to re-commit to the club.

With the trade period set to close on Wednesday at 8.30pm AEDT, there is still plenty of work to be done on some big trades that are holding up other transactions.

Dylan Shiel’s switch from GWS to Essendon is at an impasse, with the Giants less than impressed with an article featuring their contracted player discussing the deal as if it were already complete.

“I found it fascinating … I just thought, ‘The trade period must have finished’,” GWS list manager Jason McCartney told AFL Trade Radio.

“It’s just really interesting reading a double-page spread on a contracted player who has a year to run, and a deal hasn’t been done.

“We’ve put what we think is fair and reasonable (to Essendon).”

Other key deals that remain unfinalised include Lachie Neale’s move from Fremantle to Brisbane, Jesse Hogan’s on-again-off-again move from Melbourne to the Dockers, Chad Wingard’s trade from Port Adelaide to Hawthorn, Tom Scully’s potential switch from GWS to Hawthorn and Rory Lobb’s move from the Giants to the Dockers.
