Bartel the latest Cat on AFL banned list

Geelong’s Jimmy Bartel has become the latest Cats player to cop an AFL suspension.

While Geelong will regain repeat offender Steve Johnson for Saturday night’s clash with St Kilda, Bartel is set to miss the game over a high front-on bump on Adelaide’s Rory Laird on Sunday.

Bartel would risk a two-match suspension if he fights the charge.

If he takes the one-match ban, it will still leave Bartel with 87.5 demerit points hanging over him.

Port Adelaide are set to lose defender Tom Jonas for a crucial stretch of three games for the high bump which concussed St Kilda’s Dylan Roberton at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The impact of the second-quarter incident was highlighted when Roberton gave a television interview at halftime but struggled to string a sentence together.

An early guilty plea will result in Jonas missing matches against Brisbane, Adelaide and Geelong and he would risk missing a fourth match if he contests the charge.

Geelong’s James Podsiadly and Gold Coast’s Steven May can both accept reprimands over rough conduct charges.

Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli was cleared over his tackle on Western Bulldog Ryan Griffen, in which he pulled back Griffen’s right arm in what some commentators termed a “chicken wing” motion.

But the match review panel ruled he did not do so with enough force to sustain a report.
