Ban looms for Giants’ Greene after AFL hit

Having escaped the wrath of the match review panel last week, Greater Western Sydney forward Toby Greene is again in hot water after being reported for striking.

In a crude spoil attempt, Greene’s fist caught Western Bulldogs livewire Caleb Daniel flush on the mouth, later forcing him from the ground with a split lip.

It comes one week after Greene escaped a ban for headbutting Sydney’s Isaac Heeney, with the MRP deeming it to be of minor force.

Umpire Shaun Ryan revealed Greene had been cautioned by the umpires after skating close to crossing the line in recent weeks.

“We’ve been telling you for a couple of weeks now you’ve been getting very close to the edge,” Ryan told Greene after reporting him and awarding a 50-metre penalty.

Giants coach Leon Cameron warned Greene during the week about controlling his aggression.

Despite the message apparently not getting through, Cameron refused to speculate on whether he’d be without a key pillar of his dynamic forward line for Friday night’s clash with St Kilda.

“If he gets a week then that’s the way it goes. If he gets off, he gets off,” Cameron said.

“What I will say is that I love the way he plays his footy, we speak about it regularly and he’ll get better and better as he goes on in these moments.”

It soured another outstanding performance for Greene who kicked three goals including a crucial last-quarter major which helped GWS to a dramatic two-point win over the Bulldogs.

Cameron said while he was disappointed with last week’s headbutt, he wanted to review the hit on Daniel before making a call on Greene’s conduct.

“He plays on the edge, he’s tough and hard, but you can say that about Heath Shaw and Steve Johnson and Jeremy Cameron,” Cameron said.

“Every team has players who are hard and tough.”

Meanwhile, defender Nick Haynes could also miss next week after landing awkwardly in the last quarter.

Cameron said early indications were that he had suffered an adductor injury, with scans to reveal the full extent of the issue.

“We’ll find out in 48 hours time but there’s no doubt he’ll be touch and go for next week,” Cameron said.

The Giants will be sweating on the scans after Haynes put in another superb performance in the back line.
