Aussie Beresford a chance for MLB debut

Australian James Beresford could make his American Major League Baseball debut after earning promotion to the Minnesota Twins’ top squad.

Beresford, who played a key role for Australia at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Sydney in February, plied his trade for 11 years in the minor league since signing with the Twins in 2005.

“It’s absolutely outstanding news and I can’t think of a more deserving guy to get the call than James,” team Australia manager Jon Deeble said.

“James never got discouraged throughout his time in the minors, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

The 27-year-old infielder becomes the 33rd Australian to make a Major League Baseball roster.

Countrymen Peter Moylan, Warwick Saupold and Liam Hendriks have played in America’s top baseball league this season.
