Another Ebert to captain Port Adelaide

Amid AFL sackings and sex scandals, Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley reckons he’s got a good news story for you.

An Ebert is again captain of Port Adelaide.

Brad Ebert will lead Port against Sydney on Saturday, in the absence of injured skipper Travis Boak.

“What a great story, with all the stuff that is going on, that Port Adelaide is going to be led by an Ebert – great story,” Hinkley told reporters on Friday.

The Ebert name is synonymous with Port.

Brad’s uncle Russell is arguably the greatest South Australian footballer ever. He won four Magarey Medals as the best and fairest player in the SANFL. He captained Port, and also coached them.

Brad’s father Craig also had a distinguished SANFL playing career with Port and West Adelaide.

And Brad’s cousin, Brett – a son of Russell – has played 166 AFL games for Port though none this year due to a groin injury.

Brad said his revered uncle Russell congratulated him on becoming a Port captain.

“We had a quick chat but in terms of what captaincy is about and leading, he leaves it to the coaches to talk to us – he doesn’t want to tread on too many toes,” Brad told reporters on Friday.

Brad began his AFL career at West Coast, where he played 76 games before returning to his beloved Port Adelaide last season.

And throughout his career, he has carried the famous surname as an honour, rather than an added burden of living up to being an Ebert.

“I don’t feel like there is any added pressure. I accept the name and what Russell and Dad and Brett have been able to do,” he said.

“I’m making sure I create my own way I go about things.

“I’m stoked to have come back to Adelaide and have really loved being involved with Port Adelaide and now to lead the club as well, it’s great.”
