AFL to decide on GWS draft picks Thursday

Greater Western Sydney will find out if they will lose AFL draft picks over the Lachie Whitfield affair on Thursday.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said that it was appropriate that the situation be resolved by then with the national draft to be held in Sydney on Friday night.

AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon has been considering whether to penalise the Giants since former officials Graeme Allan, Craig Lambert and player Whitfield were suspended last week for conspiring to avoid a potential drug test.

GWS have steadfastly maintained their innocence in the matter and vowed to fight any penalties, arguing Allan and Lambert acted independently.

“I think the candid answer is that we’ve clearly been in some discussions with GWS – amicable discussions – and whatever happens there will be a resolution today,” McLachlan told reporters from the SCG.

“I’m not going to speculate on (those discussions), I don’t think that’s appropriate. We’re having discussions and that will be resolved, one way or the other, today.

“I’m not going to comment any further other than to say that it’s appropriate that there’s resolution and clarity before tomorrow.”

The Giants have picks 2, 15, 37, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58 and 59 in Friday’s draft, but could also serve any penalty at next year’s draft or be fined.

The trio was investigated after Whitfield spent three days at Lambert’s house, with the knowledge of Allan, in May last year in an alleged bid to avoid a possible drug test, which is a violation of the anti-doping code.

However, Allan and Lambert accepted 12-month bans and Whitfield a six-month suspension for breaching AFL rules regarding conduct unbecoming.

ASADA were comfortable with those sanctions given the AFL investigation revealed no use or intended use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Allan, who was installed as general manager of football at Collingwood in August, quit his post in response to the suspension.

Lambert has since moved on to a similar post with Brisbane and will miss the entire 2017 season.
