AFL player dead in Vegas balcony fall

An AFL player from Port Adelaide has died in Las Vegas, believed to have fallen from a hotel balcony.

Port are yet to confirm the identity of the player, who was with teammates on an end of season trip.

Shocked club captain Domenic Cassisi and senior player Jay Schulz were among Port players and officials who gathered at the club’s Alberton base as the news emerged.

A club spokesman said officials would make a statement when all relatives of the player were informed.

“We’re still trying to find relatives,” the spokesman said.

Port Adelaide players officially went on holidays from the club on Saturday, the day after the club’s best and fairest award, and a group of about seven players flew to Las Vegas.

The club released a statement earlier on Monday saying it had been told “an Australian man who has died in Las Vegas is believed to be one of its players”.

“A group from the Port Adelaide playing group left Adelaide on Saturday for a holiday,” the statement said.

“The club is in contact with members of the travelling group and is working with US authorities while investigations continue.

“Port Adelaide general manager (football) Peter Rohde is on his way to the United States to be with the players.”
