Tigers re-sign four AFL players

Stars Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin lead a group of Richmond players yet to re-sign with the AFL club.

But that list shortened considerably on Wednesday when the Tigers announced former captain Chris Newman, Jake King, Nick Vlastuin and Brandon Ellis had committed to new deals.

Veterans Newman and King will play next season, while Vlastuin has a three-year extension and fellow youngster Ellis has signed a two-year agreement.

A newspaper report on Monday said Richmond’s contract negotiations with Riewoldt had stalled.

Martin is reportedly also a long way from agreeing to a new deal, although the pair are understood to want to stay.

Saturday’s pivotal 38-point win over Adelaide left Richmond seventh on the ladder after 11 games.

There is growing excitement at Punt Rd that they will make the finals for the first time since 2001.

It’s a fantastic result for the club to extend the contracts of two of their brightest prospects and two of their most loyal servants, Richmond’s football manager Dan Richardson said in a club statement.

“Brandon and Nick represent the future at Richmond, and they’ve already shown Tiger fans why they are regarded so highly,” he said.

“Chris has been an incredible player and leader over a long period of time, and Jake has been a great story of persistence and hard work.

“Along with Trent Cotchin’s contract extension last month, our list is in good shape for the future and we hope to secure a number of our other key players in the coming months.”

Reeca Conca, Dylan Grimes and Alex Rance are others yet to sign new deals.
