AFL Live Scores: Sydney Swans vs Essendon Bombers

Arguably the biggest AFL Round 10 match will be played on Saturday and is between Sydney Swans and Essendon Bombers with the game to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Sydney Swans hold favouritism for the match but on paper it looks to be a very even match. The wet weather has hit Sydney and it is likely to be a rain affected game. Preview:

In another closely matched encounter, the Sydney Swans take on Essendon on Saturday, 4.40pm at the SCG.  The Swans will have confidence on their side this weekend, coming off a massive win over the Magpies last round.  Essendon are also coming off a big win, however, with victory over the Tigers on the Dreamtime stage last week.  Both the Bombers and Swans are fighting for consistency at the moment, with the Bombers suffering two losses prior to last round and the Swans with a loss and a draw.  This is another game where the home ground advantage could prove vital, although the Swans are far from certain in what looks like another thriller.

Son of Swans star to make AFL debut

The Sydney Swans are about to unleash another addition to their already stacked midfield and the name is one revered by long-time supporters of the AFL club.

Tom Mitchell, who will make his senior debut against Essendon at the SCG on Saturday, is the son of former rover and Swans fan favourite Barry Mitchell.

Mitchell senior tallied 170 games with the club between 1984 and 1992 and was inducted into the Swans’ Hall of Fame in 2011.

A highly touted midfielder Tom Mitchell had his seemingly inevitable ascension to senior football stalled by knee and foot injuries in his first year at the club in 2012.

After a run of seven straight games in the reserves, Mitchell has finally forced his way into the senior side.

“He’s been fantastic for the last few weeks in particular,” Swans coach John Longmire said of Mitchell.

“He’s been getting plenty of the ball, but also getting 12 or 13 tackles, which we love.

“He’s a very good strong contested-ball player, and hopefully adds to that mix that we’ve got with Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dan Hannebery.”

Longmire described Mitchell, who turns 20 on Friday, as a really smart kid.

Longmire, who played for North Melbourne against Barry Mitchell, acknowledged it could be difficult to follow in the footsteps of a famous father.

“But I think in the end ultimately you are really your own person,” Longmire said.

“You do forge your own career, you do make your own mark and I’m confident that’s what Tom will do.

“He’s a very determined young man and he’s very much a competitor, which is an attribute we loved in him all along.”

Barry Mitchell will be on hand at the SCG on Saturday to see his son graduate to AFL level.

“He’s always been a great support throughout my whole footy journey, he’s been a great help,” Tom Mitchell said.
