Preview:
St Kilda take on Melbourne on Saturday, 4.40pm at the MCG. With both teams coming off a bye last weekend, there should be a lot of energy on the field for this match. The Demons will need every ounce of that energy if they want to frighten the Saints, however, who while struggling, shouldn’t be threatened here. The Demons were demolished by 85 points only 2 weeks ago by the Magpies, and that loss will still be fresh in their memories. The Demons have been in the news all week following the sacking of Mark Neeld, with Neil Craig now the caretaker coach. While this marks the start of a new era for the Melbourne side, a win against the Saints is highly unlikely.

Milne AFL teammates cancel media call
Stephen Milne has reportedly received an assurance from St Kilda that he will play again in the AFL.

St Kilda board members met senior players on Thursday, a day after the club announced an indefinite suspension for Milne.

The Saints stood down Milne two days after Victoria Police charged him with four counts of rape.

The Age is reporting that in Thursday’s meeting, Milne was told his decorated AFL career was not over.

“We had enough regard for the players to make sure they fully understood the process that we went through in reaching the decision that we did,” Saints president Greg Westaway said.

Asked about Milne’s possible return, Westaway added: “That’s a matter for the coach and for Stephen’s welfare.”

Saints players are at odds with the club over the suspension.

When he announced the suspension on Wednesday, Westaway said the club made the decision “in the best interests of all parties concerned, and the duty of care the club has to Stephen and his family”.

The Saints have also cancelled a media conference for teammates Nick Riewoldt and Nick Dal Santo in the wake of Milne’s charges and suspension.

Riewoldt and Dal Santo will play their 250th games in Saturday’s MCG twilight match against Melbourne.

The pair were scheduled originally to speak to the media on Wednesday at the club’s Seaford headquarters.

But when it emerged the day before that Victoria Police had charged Milne, the opportunity was switched to Friday.

The media conference will go ahead, but with coach Scott Watters rather than the two stars.

Riewoldt and Dal Santo said separately on Wednesday morning that they wanted Milne to play in Saturday’s game.

But that was before the club announced Milne’s suspension.

Milne’s manager Tom Petroro also released a statement on Thursday through the AFL Players’ Association, pleading for his client’s privacy to be respected.

“Stephen is taking the legal matter very seriously and has engaged lawyers to represent him to contest the charges,” Petroro said.

“Like every citizen, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

“It is requested that the privacy of Stephen, his wife and his family be respected during this time.”

Like St Kilda, Petroro said his company Stride Management and Milne would make no further comment.

The small forward comes out of contract at the end of this season.
