Preview:
Melbourne play the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, 7.40pm at the MCG. The Demons lost to the Saints last week, while the Western Bulldogs also suffered a loss to the Tigers. The Bulldogs will be favourites to win here though, and should be able to take the points without too much trouble. I think it’s fair to say both of these teams have had an underwhelming year so far in 2013, and at the very least, this match will offer one of them a chance to remember what it’s like to win.

Demons shouldn’t get AFL draft help: Voss

Brisbane coach Michael Voss says the AFL granting struggling Melbourne concessions at this year’s draft would be unfair on other clubs.

The Demons have made an official submission for a top three priority pick at the draft as part of a proposed bail-out package, with the AFL conceding the club has a “strong argument” for getting the pick.

But Voss says such a move would be a slap in the face for clubs like the Lions who have had to do without top draft picks in the past few seasons as Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney were given first call on most of the young talent in the country.

“I find it disturbing to be brutally honest,” Voss told reporters on Tuesday.

“We’ve just come out of the greatest compromised draft in the last two or three years. Our teams that have been struggling through that time have received no leg-up whatsoever and all of a sudden we find out at the back of that compromised draft that apparently priority picks are now back on the table.

“If that is the case then I think quite rightly our football club should be asking the same question as well as Port, Western Bulldogs and a few other teams.”

Voss said granting the Demons a priority pick would be “inappropriate” and the club should be forced to recruit through other means as others have done over the past couple of seasons.

The draft concessions for the Suns and Giants have resulted in the Lions looking overseas for new signings, while the club also used the free agency system to secure Brent Moloney from the Demons last year.

“We’ve been forced to go find and get our edge through other means,” he said.

“That’s been pretty significant to find ourselves at this point. We’ve had our challenges.”
