Preview:

The last of Saturday’s matches is Melbourne vs Brisbane, 7.10pm at TIO Stadium. The Lions are expected to win this comfortably, especially after their impressive
comeback victory against North Melbourne last week. While Brisbane have had an average season at best, they have managed to regain a little form and confidence over
the last few rounds. The same can not be said for the Demons, who lost to the Cats last week and look unlikely to bounce back after a troubled 2013.

Voss talks down finals hopes for Lions

Don’t mention AFL finals to Michael Voss, but his Brisbane Lions had better keep bringing their mouthguards to training.

Voss again ducked and weaved at the Gabba on Monday as it was put to him the resurrected Lions (6-9) could indeed put themselves in top eight contention by continuing a vibrant 3-1 run over the past month.

Winnable games against Melbourne (Darwin), Port Adelaide (away) and St Kilda (home) approach in the next three weeks before they finish with Richmond, Greater Western Sydney, Western Bulldogs and Geelong.

But even Saturday night’s stirring comeback against North Melbourne, to put them two wins from eighth, and the tougher draws for mid-table rivals hasn’t put finals into Voss’s thoughts.

“I don’t know how you can possibly justify even remotely thinking about it, talking about it and even entertaining the idea,” he said. “We’ve just had our first back-to-back win this year.

“To say talking about it is a little bit ahead would be a dramatic understatement.”

With Kangaroos coach Brad Scott labelling the Lions a “momentum side”, Voss is taking pleasure out of Brisbane’s supreme fitness and finishing ability, but demanding more consistency.

As well as coming from 33 points down late in the third term against North, they reeled in Geelong after trailing by 52.

Voss attributed hard, uncompromising training for the turnaround.

“It’s been a key focus for us the entire season but certainly has been one of the catalysts for us coming into the week,” he said.

“The boys have to make sure they bring their mouthguard as we are going to have another tough session because it is certainly getting them into the right mindset at the moment.

“There’s still some areas of our games that we have to improve on but who can question how we are finishing?

“They should be getting a lot of confidence in their legs and also in each other that they can finish off games.”

Off-contract at the end of the season, Voss also dismissed any notion that his side’s revival had boosted his confidence in keeping his job for 2014.

“My position hasn’t changed now as it hasn’t changed eight weeks ago: it will be dealt with at the (end of the season),” he said.

The Lions are hopeful both Simon Black (knee) and Brent Moloney (calf) will return against Melbourne by passing Wednesday fitness tests.
