Preview:
Hawthorn take on the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, 1.45pm at Aurora Stadium. Only the loyal or very brave would give the Bulldogs a chance here, with the Hawks
expected to walk away with the points. If Hawthorn’s 45 point demolition of Port Adelaide last week is anything to go by, the Bulldogs will have to watch out. Saying all
that, however, the Bulldogs looked pretty good last week against the Bombers, even though they came out losers by 31 points. Even if they can hold and improve on last
week’s effort, though, the best the Bulldogs can expect here is a good loss.

Dogs’ coach wary of AFL draft deal
Western Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney says his young key forwards need some help but has warned of the dangers of selling the farm to secure the AFL’s No.1 draft pick.
Winless Greater Western Sydney are considering trading the top pick – which is likely to be used on 17-year-old key forward Tom Boyd – in the November draft.
The Bulldogs are 15th on the ladder after 16 rounds with 22-year-old key forward Liam Jones (18 goals in 15 games) and raw-boned 24-year-old Jarrad Grant (one goal in one game) yet to put their stamp on the competition.
“We know we have young forwards here carrying a lot of responsibility,” McCartney said on Thursday.
“We’ll get a dividend out of that in time. They probably could do with a little bit of help and they could do with some better supply.
“It’s not as simple as putting a player in the forward line and say right, everything’s fixed.
“You need the right type of player and the right type of person who fits what we’re doing.”
McCartney said the Giants’ move to put the No.1 pick on the table was intriguing and could trigger a stampede.
“It was an interesting ploy to throw it up, just maybe (because) they were so public with that,” McCartney said.
“All of a sudden you get 12 to 15 clubs jumping over each other.
“Sometimes you get in those boat races and you give up more than you want to give up.
“It’s easy to throw things up when you’ve got all the cards.”
McCartney said the 192cm, 85kg Grant’s 19-possession performance last week against Essendon was a solid effort.
“We’re still pretty optimistic about what he’ll become,” McCartney said.
The Bulldogs’ mentor also urged his midfielders to make better decisions going into attack.
“We’ve got some good young running players who at the moment unload the ball a touch earlier than they need to,” he said.
“We probably hit the first one rather than getting the one over the back a little bit on Sunday.”
Skipper Matthew Boyd trained on Thursday at Whitten Oval but will miss a third week with a fractured cheekbone.
