Preview:
The Fremantle Dockers play the Brisbane Lions on Saturday, 2.40pm at Patersons Stadium. The Dockers will be big favourites to win this one, with Brisbane really struggling over the first half of the season. While the injury toll might place some extra pressure on the Dockers, it’s hard to go past the Fremantle side at home this weekend. Brisbane will really have to pull out something special if they want to threaten the Dockers, although with a bye last week, they may at least be fresh enough to give it a good shot.

Lions can’t rely on stars any more: Voss

Some big names are set to return for Brisbane but coach Michael Voss admits the days of relying on star players for victory are over for the battling AFL club.

Still, Voss is keeping his fingers crossed for something special against Fremantle on Saturday to ensure veteran Simon Black remembers a milestone fondly.

Voss used their last round bye to hammer home a team mentality in a bid to salvage something from the Lions’ 2013 season finish.

Apart from the break, the Lions (3-7 record) may also be buoyed by the return of Tom Rockliff (quad), Matthew Leuenberger (thumb) and Daniel Rich (shoulder) from injury against the Dockers.

But Voss said the team should not rely on the cavalry returning.

“That group mentality is important for us. It has given us a chance in games,” he said on Wednesday.

“We are not pretending that we have the stars to rely on for us to get the win.

“We need that work rate. We need to make sure we don’t have defensive lapses.”

The Lions have been written off for the Patersons Stadium clash and are $9.50 with some bookmakers – not that Voss was offended.

“I don’t think we have earned the right to have the perception that we should be going in with anything but that (underdog status) – it is up to us (to change that),” he said.

Still, with Black set to notch game No.319 – eclipsing Marcus Ashcroft’s club record – Voss dared to dream.

“Hopefully we get to celebrate as we should, to be able to honour his contribution to the game – it’s very significant,” he said.

“He’s been a genius, an absolute champion, a true role model for our club.”

Voss admitted he was not sure what to think when Black first arrived from WA in 1997.

“Certainly he was a very skinny kid,” Voss said with a smile.

“But he had this appetite to get better.”

In the end, triple premiership Lions captain Voss said, fellow Brownlow Medallist Black was “one of” the best he had played with.

“His durability and consistency, if he isn’t in the top three (of all time) I would be really surprised,” he said.
