AFL bottom side Greater Western Sydney are bracing for some bad news on the injury front with Setanta O’hAilpin and Dean Brogan sent to hospital for scans following Sunday’s 67-point loss to Carlton.
The Blues led by only 10 points at halftime but conceded just 1.3 in the second half to claim victory 15.20 (110) to 6.7 (43) and register their fifth win in the first six rounds.
O’hAilpin, aged 29 and making his debut for the Giants against his former club, booted two goals in the first half but limped off with a serious knee injury in the third quarter.
Brogan was subbed off earlier in the third term with an arm injury.
“He (O’hAilpin) has gone to a hospital to have a scan. They think it’s an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament),” Giants coach Kevin Sheedy said.
“If that is the case then we’ll probably bring young (rookie-listed) Andrew Phillips onto the list.
“It’s very awkward for Setanta because he was looking forward to playing against Carlton.
“He was giving us a really good contest up there with a couple of goals.
“It was pretty handy for him to play well and it gives him some belief that he still has a career.
“Dean Brogan? I think he’s had his arm x-rayed. I don’t know if it’s broken or cracked.
“They (Giants’ medical staff) are probably being a bit more positive about Dean rather than Setanta.”
