AFL Giants chase more firsts

In a season stuffed full of franchise firsts, GWS Giants can tick off a couple more AFL boxes when they meet North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Kangaroos, along with Collingwood and West Coast, are the only sides the Giants haven’t beaten in their first five seasons.

GWS have won six road games this year twice as many as in each of the last two seasons.

However, they have yet to collect a major scalp on the road in 2016, with all of their away wins coming against clubs outside of the eight.

They lost their three biggest away assignments against Adelaide, Geelong and Sydney, but the gap between their best and worst performances has dropped significantly.

Even last year when they finished 11-11 they still suffered massive losses of 87 to West Coast and 89 to Sydney.

Their biggest losing margin this year was a 32-point home defeat by Collingwood and they were only a combined -92 across their six losses, three of them by 10 points or less.

While their form has traditionally tailed off in the final weeks of their four previous seasons, the Giants are surging as September approaches.

They have won five of their last six and it really should have been 6-0, but West Coast kicked a winning goal just before the siren.

They finish their home and away campaign at Etihad Stadium, a venue where they lost their first six games, but have won five of their last seven.
