Greater Western Sydney forward Jeremy Cameron has virtually rewritten his personal record book over the past month, with his coach lauding his career-best form and soaring work rate.
In last Saturday’s AFL derby win against Sydney, Cameron racked up career-highs in kicks (17) and disposals (24), just a week after his best ever handball tally of 10.
This season, Cameron has almost doubled his career average for disposals per game to over 18.
He set a personal record of 12 marks back in round two when his six-goal haul was just one shy of another personal best.
His pressure and physicality was also important against Sydney, whose defender Heath Grundy spent time off he ground after suffering a facial injury in a crunching clash with Cameron.
Cameron was a little off target with his kicking, logging 2.4 but is still among the Coleman Medal frontrunners with 16.
However, it’s the other aspects of the 24 year-old forward’s game and his contributions around the ground which have drawn most praise from his coach and namesake.
“Every game he plays he’s getting better and he’s probably in the best form he’s been in,” Giants’ coach Leon Cameron said.
“It’s not on the scoreboard, but around the ground.
“Whether he’s playing wing, whether he pushed back and helped our defence, whether he leads up at the footy, whether he’s kicking the ball inside 50 or having a shot himself, he’s on top of his game at the moment.
“The pleasing thing is he wants more and to have that sort of statistic (24 disposals) alongside your name as a key forward shows that his work rate is going through the roof.”
He said ruckman Shane Mumford had also started the season in great form.
Mumford was also in personal record-setting form last weekend, as he dominated against his former club.
He logged a career-high 62 hitouts, eclipsing his previous best of 60 against Melbourne three years ago.
He helped give GWS a colossal 67-29 advantage in that department, piling up over four times more hitouts than both Kurt Tippett and Callum Sinclair.
“Contested possession is obviously his forte, but in terms of getting the footy and having an influence around stoppages, he’s in really good form,” Leon Cameron said.
