AFL concerned about bikie visit

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says he is concerned that a Bandidos bikie who twice survived being shot was invited into Richmond’s dressing rooms by a player.

Tigers forward Jake King reportedly invited Toby Mitchell into the club’s MCG rooms during a Round 20 match when he was out injured.

The club became aware that the bikie had been in the rooms and told King to end his association with Mitchell, according to the Herald Sun.

Mr Demetriou said the report concerned him.

“We’ve made it very clear in all our sessions with the clubs post the ACC (Australian Crime Commission) announcement … that if you put yourself in that position you are vulnerable,” he told ABC radio in Melbourne.

“And why would you do that. There’s an association, and it doesn’t start just in the change rooms.”

In February the ACC alleged there was widespread use of drugs and organised crime involvement in professional sport.

The commission’s 12-month investigation found links with crime groups may have led to match-fixing and phoney manipulation of betting markets.

King has reportedly been counselled about the issue and the entire player list has been warned not to associate with criminals.

There is no accusation of any links of any criminal nature between Mitchell and King and club officials believe the pair are acquaintances rather than close friends.

Mitchell suffered arm injuries after more than 30 shots were fired at a Melton bikie clubhouse in March.

The shooting at Melton was the second attempt on Mitchell’s life.

He was shot five times in the hip and back at a shopping centre car park in 2011.
