Adam Goodes to return to Swans training

Humbled by an outpouring of support, Adam Goodes is set to resume his AFL career this week.

Granted indefinite leave last week as he struggled to deal with persistent vilification from sections of opposing teams’ fans, Goodes will return to training with Sydney on Tuesday.

He will be available for Saturday’s away clash with Geelong at Simonds Stadium.

Goodes missed last Saturday’s home win over Adelaide.

But he was moved by the show of public support he received at the SCG and elsewhere following months of abuse which the club believes has been motivated by his outspoken views on race issues.

“I spoke to Adam late yesterday afternoon and he’s intending to come and train tomorrow and be available for selection this week,” coach John Longmire said on Monday.

“He’s been away with the family … so he was just taking some time off.

“He was incredibly humbled by the support he received over the weekend.

“I don’t think he had intentions to watch the (Swans) game, but he ended up watching the final three quarters and couldn’t believe the amount of support that he had.

“We as a football club are just incredibly grateful for the amount of support from the football community.”
