Ablett tells Suns he wants AFL trade

Gold Coast have confirmed former captain Gary Ablett has formally requested a trade to Geelong during next month’s AFL exchange period.

The Suns released a short statement on Tuesday to announce the dual Brownlow Medallist’s desire to return to the Cats.

Ablett, 33, played 192 games for the Cats before joining the Suns in a multi-million dollar deal at the end of 2010.

The midfielder was linked with a return to Geelong at the end of last season and his future at the Suns was a constant question throughout the 2017 campaign.

Suns chief executive Mark Evans said the Suns will consider Ablett’s request but will only let him go if a suitable deal with the Cats can be reached.

“We indicated to Gary and his manager Liam Pickering that there are conditions that will need to be met for the Gold Coast if this is to be achieved,” Evans said.

Ablett has played just 34 games in the past three seasons as injuries have disrupted his time at Gold Coast.

Despite only featuring in 14 matches this year, Ablett still won the Suns’ club champion prize for the fourth time.
