Gary Ablett needs the green light from Michael Christian as well as the Geelong medical staff for Friday night’s AFL match against Sydney.
Ablett’s dramatic start to this season took another twist on Sunday when he was reported for striking Essendon onballer Dylan Shiel.
The two-time Brownlow Medallist, who was high among Geelong’s best again in their win, has not been suspended in his 328-game career.
Ablett caught Shiel high with a crude forearm in the first quarter, but the Essendon star played out the match and was high among their best.
The likelihood is that Christian, the AFL match reviewer, will fine rather than suspend Ablett.
Certainly coach Chris Scott was not overly worried.
“Sometimes it can be a real challenge to fight your way through the rest of the game when you’re worried about the serious implications of a report,” Scott said of Ablett’s strong performance on Sunday.
“I don’t think this fits into that category.”
Provided Ablett escapes suspension, he is still no guarantee to play in Friday night’s match against Sydney despite his outstanding form.
The five-day break and the interstate game means Geelong could rest the 34-year-old.
But Ablett was adamant after Sunday’s match that he wants to keep playing.
“I’m not 100 per cent sure yet, it all depends on what the physios say and (what) the docs say,” Ablett told Channel Seven.
“My body is feeling good at the moment, so I want to play as long as I possibly can.
“If I start to get a bit sore, then we’ll take the week off.”
Western Bulldogs forward Billy Gowers will also come under Christian’s match review microscope for throwing his head back at Richmond defender Dylan Grimes.
