Ablett backs push for AFL on Good Friday

Dual Brownlow medallist and committed Christian Gary Ablett will have no problem if the AFL perform an about-face and schedule matches on Good Friday.

Ablett posted a photo on Twitter in May showing himself in prayer, head bowed, with teammates before a match.

Gold Coast are one of several clubs campaigning for the league to schedule matches on Good Friday.

Club chiefs reportedly presented a united front to the league on Monday, saying it was time for the AFL to catch up with rival codes such as the NRL regarding Good Friday scheduling.

AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou insists the community doesn’t want it.

But Ablett says there’s no conflict between his faith and the move for games to be played on Good Friday.

“I’m happy to play whenever we’re told we need to play to be honest,” Ablett said on Tuesday.

“If that’s a good thing for the club and a good thing for the AFL, I’m all for it.”

Ablett grew up as a churchgoer with his dad Gary Snr, Geelong’s eight-time All-Australian superstar.

“My faith is everything to me. Without God I don’t think anything is possible,” he said.

“I don’t talk about it too much but my faith is important to me.

“I’ve been on a journey and it has been something that I am more open about than I have been in the past and I’m happy to chat about that.

“All I need to say is that I think I’m very blessed to be in the position I am in.

“I am also thankful to God for that and thankful I can be a role model for a lot of young kids growing up.”
