Bernard Tomic’s Hopman Cup winning streak came to a crashing end after slumping to a 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 defeat to big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic on Saturday night.

Tomic put up a big fight in the opening set, battling from a break down to send it to a tie break.

But he imploded in the second set, with Raonic racing to a 5-0 lead before sealing the match in 74 minutes.

The result gave Canada a 1-0 lead, meaning Sam Stosur needs to beat Eugenie Bouchard to keep Australia’s hopes of victory in the tie alive.

“I was really happy with how I started my season. I put in a lot of work and I feel like I’m getting better,” Raonic said.

Tomic starred at last summer’s Hopman Cup, beating then world No.1 Novak Djokovic, Italian Andreas Seppi and German Tommy Haas.

The 21-year-old went on to win the Sydney International, before making the third round of the Australian Open.

But his bid to break into the world’s top 10 went pear shaped from that point on, with a series of first-round bomb outs resulting in a slip to 51st in the rankings.

Tomic has set his sights on breaking into the world’s top 20 in 2014.

But he will need to lift his game if he is to achieve that goal.
