India 421 all out, set S Africa 458 to win

India set South Africa a daunting target of 458 to win the first Test as Zaheer Khan’s late 29 not out capped a humbling experience for the top-ranked Proteas.

Khan clubbed two sixes and three fours at the end after a partnership of 222 between Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli broke the back of South Africa’s bowling.

Pujara made 153 for his sixth Test century and fourth score over 150. Kohli was out for 96, just short of a century in both innings.

Vernon Philander and Jacques Kallis picked up three wickets each but South Africa’s attack was completely vulnerable without injured quick bowler Morne Morkel.

No team has made more than 351 batting last at the Wanderers and the world record for a successful fourth-innings run chase anywhere is 418.
