A shattered Kevin Streelman had his Australian Open dream ended on Friday when he was hospitalised with an eye infection.
An emotional Streelman was on the verge of tears as he was forced to withdraw from the tournament just four holes into his second round.
Ultimately as the pain overcame the American and he struggled with dizziness he decided it was too much to contend with.
The world No.43, who was grouped with Australian stars Adam Scott and Jason Day, sensed something was wrong when he woke up on Friday morning.
He was two-under to start the second round and actually started with a birdie.
But as his condition worsened, so did his card – posting a double bogey on the par three third, and a bogey on the par four fourth before pulling the pin.
He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment.
“It’s pretty rough right now but we’ll see what we can do,” Streelman told Channel Seven.
“…The doctor said it was pretty badly infected.
“I’ve been trying to do some drops but I started getting dizzy and it’s the first time I’ve ever done it at a tournament (withdrawn).
“I’m really sad to do it.”
The 35-year-old, who won the PGA Tour’s Tampa Bay Championship in March, said he hoped to return to Australia.
