Korean wins Perth golf event

West Australian Brody Ninyette blew the perfect chance to land his maiden professional title as Korean Jin Jeong held his nerve to win the $US2 million ($A2.08 million) Perth International in a playoff.

Overnight leader Ninyette bogeyed two of his final three holes to miss the playoff altogether, leaving England’s Ross Fisher and former world No.1 amateur Jin Jeong to battle it out for the title.

Jeong held the upper hand when Fisher was left with a four-metre putt for par after fluffing his chip onto the green.

Fisher sent that putt wide, leaving Jeong with a one-metre putt to win the tournament.

Jeong, ranked 1066 in the world, calmly sunk his shot to land the title and pocket a handy $US333,330 winner’s cheque.

More importantly, his win secured him a two-year exemption on the European Tour.

World No.21 Dustin Johnson shot a six-under 66 on Sunday to finish at four-under, but his rounds of 74 and 75 on Friday and Saturday respectively cost him any chance of victory.

Ninyette finished equal third with little-known Australian Dimitrios Papadatos and England’s Danny Willett, while Brett Rumford finished sixth at seven-under.

Ireland’s Peter Lawrie retained his European Tour card after finishing a tie for 18th.

“I’m just glad it’s over to be honest with you,” Fisher said.

“I’ve never felt so much pressure than I’ve felt in the past eight weeks.

“Can’t sleep, can’t eat properly, it’s just horrendous. I wouldn’t wish it in my worst enemy.

“Now I’ll go home and be with the family and stop being grumpy.”

A woman on the gallery of the 18th green was knocked to the ground when Michael Hoey’s wayward approach shot struck her.
