Wallabies halfback Will Genia says the eight-point loss to the world champion All Blacks will still give his side a big confidence boost heading into the Spring Tour.
The Wallabies fly back into Sydney on Sunday after a fast paced 41-33 loss in the third Bledisloe Cup Test in Dunedin on Saturday night.
They have until Friday before they embark on a five-match Spring Tour of Europe starting on November 2 against England at Twickenham.
The Wallabies have shown progress since being beaten by the All Blacks 47-29 and 27-16 in August – their first two internationals under new coach Ewen McKenzie.
Despite being unable to cap off his 50th Test appearance with a win, Genia looked to the silver lining instead – saying he thought his teammates handled the frantic pace well on Saturday night.
“We can build on this,” he said.
“We’ve built a playing style that we’re now confident with and are just building combinations and getting familiar with everyone.
“It’s definitely a big confidence boost moving into the Spring Tour for us.”
Genia said the Wallabies showed a lot of resolve and character to stay in the match when they fell behind early.
“At 23-12, we could have thrown in the towel and got spanked,” he said.
“We made mistakes early on. But the second half was a lot better because we held the ball, showed discipline, built pressure and managed to score points.
“We were still chasing the game right at the end even though we couldn’t win so it’s about having pride.”
