Bownlow Medal 2013: Gary Ablett drifts as money for Sam Mitchell pours in

The Brownlow Medal plunge on Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell has continued with punters backing him to win more than $250,000 since Friday.

A $21 chance last Monday, Mitchell has been backed into a $5.50 chance behind Gold Coast’s Gary Ablett who has drifted from $1.68 out to $1.80.

“The money for Mitchell has been relentless. Since Friday morning 90% of all bets taken on the Brownlow have been on him,” Centrebet’s Michael Felgate said.

“This is one of the biggest plunges we have had on the Brownlow. There are usually plenty of tips and so-called leaks in the lead-up to the count, but this has been a sustained betting plunge over a number of days,” Felgate said.

Due to the money for Mitchell, Gary Ablett’s Brownlow odds have drifted from $1.68 last Monday out to $1.80.

“Ablett has been friendless since in recent days which is amazing considering he has been a long odds-on favourite to win the Brownlow for most of the year getting as low as $1.40 mid-season,” Felgate said.

Geelong’s Joel Selwood was a big firmer in betting late in the season from $41 in round 15 to $3.25 in the final round but the punters have gone cold since then and he is back out to $5.25.

Collingwood pair Scott Pendlebury $11 and Dane Swan $14 are next in betting but have had no recent support.

“Punters have decided this year’s Brownlow Medal is a two-horse race between Gary Ablett and Sam Mitchell with the late money backing Mitchell.”
