Bomber veterans to get AFL farewell at MCG

Essendon ruckman David Hille’s first AFL game in almost four months will be the last of his career.

The 32-year-old will be given a farewell game, as will 30-year-old Nathan Lovett-Murray, as the Bombers’ season reaches a premature end against Richmond at the MCG on Saturday night.

Hille, who made his debut in 2001 and won the club’s best and fairest award in 2008, will play his 197th AFL game on Saturday night.

He’s been out of the side since round six, with the club preferring Paddy Ryder and Tom Bellchambers.

Utility Lovett-Murray, who debuted in 2004 and will end his career on 145 games, has managed to break into the AFL side just twice this season.

“When I first came to the club I was hoping to play one game and I’ve played 145. I’ve had a really good run and it’s a great club,” Lovett-Murray said.

While the Bombers have been kicked out of this year’s finals, fined $2 million, had their coach James Hird suspended for a year and lost some early picks in the next two national drafts, Hille said the club’s future was bright.

“A lot of the young guys have developed really well and I’ve got a lot of confidence in the team moving forward,” he said.

“I’d love to be a part of it but I’m not going to be and I wish them all the best.”
