Young wildcard James Duckworth has exited the US Open in the first round, joining fellow Australian Ashleigh Barty as a loser on day three at Flushing Meadows.

Duckworth lost his first-round match 3-6 6-2 6-4 6-1 to American Tim Smyczek, leaving Bernard Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt as the only remaining Australians in the singles draw.

Earlier on Wednesday, Barty lost her second-round match 6-4 6-0 to Russian 32nd seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Duckworth started strongly to take the opening set but, in a match punctuated by rain delays, the American slowly took control, winning in just under three hours.

Barty, just 17, said her straight-sets loss was an eye opener.

“I played a pretty solid first set and I created an opportunity for myself but you know unfortunately I wasn’t able to take that today,” she said.

“There’s no comparison from me to her so I just have to continue to work on my game and try and put my best foot forward.”

Hewitt is playing his first-round match on Wednesday against American Brian Baker.
