James Moffat has claimed his maiden V8 Supercars victory and an historic win for Nissan in the opening race of this weekend’s round at Winton.
Moffat, the son of legendary V8 driver Allan, led the one-two finish for Nissan in Saturday’s 60/60 super sprint event in the Victorian town, with teammate Michael Caruso crossing the line in second and Holden’s Jason Bright in third.
“Oh my god, I can’t believe it,” a stunned Moffat said over the team radio.
“This is not for me, this is for everybody who helped me get here.”
Nissan, who joined the top-flight series this season after a 21-year absence, have not won an Australian touring car/V8 Supercar championship race since 1992.
Their last one-two finish came a year earlier in 1991.
Caruso went into the half-time break at the front of the pack after pole-sitter and championship leader Jamie Whincup was forced out on lap 10 with a gearbox issue.
But he surrendered the lead to Moffat into the first turn after the double-file rolling restart, allowing his teammate to open a comfortable lead.
Moffat had shown pace at the rural circuit near Wangaratta, having set the fastest times in practice sessions two and three.
While Whincup’s sidelining was unwelcome news for Red Bull Racing, it worked in favour of Ford’s Mark Winterbottom – whose fourth placing bagged him a handful of points to help close the gap on the championship standings.
Whincup’s teammate Craig Lowndes ended the race a lowly 21st.
The final two 100km races of the round will be held on Sunday.
