Time running out for Goodes: Longmire

Sydney coach John Longmire concedes dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes’ AFL season could be over if he doesn’t make significant strides in the next week of his rehabilitation from a knee injury.

Goodes has been sidelined since damaging his cartilage in the Swans’ round 13 clash with Port Adelaide on June 13.

The 33-year-old is yet to resume training with the Swans’ main group, and Longmire said on Thursday that the next week would be critical in his hopes of returning for the reigning premiers.

“The next few days are pretty important for Adam and whether he gets and opportunity to play this year or not,” Longmire said of Goodes.

“He’s due to run tomorrow and it’d be fair to say time’s sort of pushing it now, and he needs for things to go well pretty quickly from here.

“He hasn’t been able to train yet with the team, and that point is taking longer than what we’d hoped and he’d hoped.

“…We need to make a decision in the next few days, whether he’s actually able to train.

“To see how he responds in the coming days to an increase in the training load. He hasn’t responded well to this point ,and he knows and understands he needs to get going in the next few days.”

Longmire said Goodes, who is the club’s games record holder with 331 matches, was “hopeful not confident” on his chances of finding fitness in time to bid for a third premiership medal.

“That’s where it’s at,” he said.

“He’s wanting to play, but his knee is still a little bit sore.

“He knows that every step he’s taken to this point he hasn’t quite got over that hump.

“He hasn’t had too may wins in his rehab, to use his own words.”
