Roosters not my concern says Anasta

Wests Tigers halfback Braith Anasta admits it does hurt to see his former club Sydney Roosters flying high in the NRL, but insists those feelings won’t play a part in Monday’s clash with the ladder leaders.

Anasta, who left the Roosters at the end of last year, will face his old teammates at Allianz Stadium for the first time this season.

While the tri-colours are relishing their berth atop the ladder with just four games remaining, the Tigers are languishing in second-last spot – having lost their last four fixtures.

“It hurts a little bit, but it’s not something that I’ve thought about,” Anasta said of watching the Roosters’ success on Friday.

“You get so entrenched in your own world playing at the Tigers and being a Tigers man now.

“I look at them and I’m happy for the way they’re doing – they’re killing it. But it’s no surprise to me.

“You look at the playing roster they had before they bought (James) Maloney, (Sonny Bill) Williams and (Michael) Jennings, and I thought it was strong at that stage.

“To add them three to it, and (Luke) O’Donnell, there’s no surprise to see how good they’re going. They’re really a big chance of winning the comp.”

The 31-year-old, who’s had a fair share of injuries this season, said he would be treating the round 23 battle like any other – with the aim of causing an upset.

“It’ll mean a hell of a lot (to win),” he said.

“Regardless of whether it’s the Roosters or anyone else, just getting that win and trying to turn things around for the Tigers and for myself and try and play some good footy.

Monday night will see the long-awaited return of veteran Lote Tuqiri, who hasn’t played an NRL game since breaking his arm in July last year.

The dual international featured in the Tigers’ NSW Cup loss to Cronulla last Saturday and is raring to get back on the paddock.

“I don’t know if I’ll make too much of a difference but I’m coming back and I’m really excited to play back in the NRL,” he told reporters.

“I’ve had a bit of luck with a few guys being injured and everything else, but that’s sort of how my career’s panned out. I’ve had a lot of luck along the way.”

But when asked if he was going to be at the Tigers next year, Tuqiri remained tight-lipped.

“I haven’t even factored that into my thinking,” he said.

“I’m just going to go out there, have some fun and see how my body pulls up.”

He said his focus was on helping the struggling Tigers see through the year and send off the likes of departing playmaker Benji Marshall and Blake Ayshford
