Jason Day’s quest for his maiden major hit a second round hurdle at the US PGA Championship when a couple of poor driver swings cost him dearly on Friday.
Despite pushing into a share of the lead early the 25-year-old posted a one-over 71 in constant rain during the second round, dropping him into a tie for 15th at two-under.
Day only had two poor holes in the round and the mistakes came off the tee when using driver.
Having implemented the newest TaylorMade SLDR or ‘Slider’ driver into his bag in the lead up to the event Day was hopeful of some decent results.
But a bogey on the 18th hole came when he lost the ball way right into the hospitality tents.
More crippling was a double bogey on the easiest hole on the course, the par five fourth. Day once again lost his tee ball way right where it nestled up against the out-of-bounds fence into an unplayable lie.
As a result the Queenslander headed straight to the range post round and went back to his old driver to get ready for round three.
He fully expects to once again use the new technology, once he gets more time to get used to the nuances.
“I hit the Slider great on the range and in the practice round I hit it great, but right now I’m just not hitting it as well as I should,” Day said.
“So I think the next step is just to go and hit some balls on the range with my old driver and try to get that feeling back again.
“Overall, I actually played pretty decent again today, it was just a couple of holes I made a mess of out there.”
Day was also concerned his iron play was a little rusty due to compensation from the driver swing, another reason to return to old faithful.
Despite his disappointment he was hopeful of making a run at the trophy over the weekend.
“I just have to keep chipping away,” he said.
“I have got two days to capitalise and try and win my first major.”
