Port hero Wingard cool in an AFL crisis

Chad Wingard must have been the only one among almost 44,000 people that wasn’t nervous.

Port Adelaide’s teen star had the footy, 35 metres out from goal, his side two points down against arch enemy Adelaide.

There were 30 seconds remaining in the AFL grudge match played before 43,368 spectators at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

Kick the goal, Port win and all but book themselves a return to the AFL finals after a five-year absence.

Miss, the Crows win and Port’s finals dream remains in doubt.

Surely, the 19-year-old was nervous?

“I wasn’t actually nervous – I felt the pressure to put us in front but it was all the work leading up to that … I was just lucky enough to be at the end of it,” Wingard said.

“I was just trying to block out every noise and go through my routine and just execute. You have just got to live in the moment.

“(My heart) wasn’t pounding. I was just happy to be given the opportunity.”

The 19-year-old kicked accurately for his fifth goal of the latest stunning game in his break-out second season.

“I like to stand up in big games but it’s all about team performance and we had 22 blokes out there giving their all … we didn’t give up,” he said.

Port coach Ken Hinkley said Wingard’s best-afield display “surely” assures the smooth-moving left-footer of All Australian selection.

“He has had an amazing year and today was probably the icing on the cake for him,” Hinkley said.

“He’s a special player obviously at such a young age.”
