The Wests Tigers have moved to fill the void of departing NRL playmaker Benji Marshall next season with the signing of teenage halves Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses to new four-year deals.
And the Tigers also moved to add more experience on Monday by contracting veteran utility Dene Halatau to return after four seasons at Canterbury.
The re-signings of 18-year-olds Brooks and Moses came less than two weeks after Marshall announced his intention to leave at the end of the season for rugby union following 11 years at the club.
Coach Mick Potter said Brooks and Moses, who both rose through the junior ranks at Balmain and currently play in the Holden Cup, were great prospects.
“Both boys have plenty of potential and are talented kids in their own right,” Potter said in a statement.
“They have shown right throughout schoolboy footy and the NYC that they can cut it easily. I have no doubt that we will see the best of them in the next couple of years.”
Moses, named 2012 NSWRL SG Ball Player of the Year, said it was an easy decision to stay at the Tigers thanks to the support from Potter and his first-grade side.
“This is just the beginning for me,” Moses said.
The Tigers have also re-signed NSW Cup hooker Joel Luani for two years as a potential back-up for captain Robbie Farah.
Halatau spent seven years at the Tigers and was a part of their 2005 premiership-winning team before leaving for the Bulldogs in 2010.
New Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer said the 30-year-old’s signing was more than just about football.
“His experience and leadership as a senior player is going to be invaluable for some of our younger players,” Mayer said.
“We have been very clear that we are investing very heavily in our juniors and a player like Dene will provide leadership and mentoring for the group.
“Dene has a fantastic reputation in the game as a true leader.”
